As we age, we lose overall support for the overlying soft tissue and muscles on our face, which results in deep lines along the sides of the nose (laugh lines) and a heavier jawline.  The process of volume loss can start as early as 30 years old and make us appear older and tired.

Injectable fillers are recommended in order to replace lost volume and achieve a more natural, youthful appearance, however, often fillers are not enough by themselves. We are happy to offer our newest service, PDO Threads, for patients needing that extra “lift” or for those who are not an ideal candidate for filler.

The Benefits of PDO Threads

A PDO thread lift, also called a barbed suture lift, is a cosmetic procedure that aims to lift and sculpt the shape of your face, resulting in the lifting and tightening of the skin. As an added bonus, this service stimulates collagen production inside the skin.

PDO Threads, Neurotoxins and Fillers

The PDO Threads Process

Invisible, painless “barbs” on the PDO threads grab onto your skin and grip the underlying tissue and muscles as the thread is pulled tight. Your body then detects a suture material that stimulates collagen production in the affected area.

Polydioxanone threads are made of a synthetic biodegradable polymer that has been used in surgery for many years. The entire procedure takes only 15-30 minutes and can last from 1-3 years, depending on the patient.

PDO Threads Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a candidate for PDO Threads?

The typical candidate for a thread lift is in their late 30s to early 50s. A person who is generally in good health and is just starting to notice the signs of aging may benefit the most from the subtle impact of a thread lift. Those who can’t have a surgical facelift because of medical conditions that make general anesthesia risky may consider a thread lift as a safer alternative.

How does a PDO Thread Lift compare to filler?

While they both play a role, they also work well together. If a patient needs more volume, we will add filler to the area, then lift the sagging skin with threads once the desired projection is achieved.

Are there any side effects?

The PDO Thread Lift is considered a low-risk procedure, but there are side effects and a risk of complications. After a thread lift, it’s not uncommon to experience the following:

  • bruising
  • swelling
  • bleeding
  • slight pain at the site of the thread injection

There is a 15 to 20 percent chance of complications, including dimpling. Possible complications are minor and can easily be corrected.

Who is not a good candidate?

  • Patients whose skin is too thin
  • Patients with a lidocaine allergy
  • Patients with a current facial infection

How much downtime will I experience after the PDO Threads Lift?

Expect 1-2 weeks of social downtime with minor swelling and bruising.

What other areas of the body can be treated with PDO Threads?

Any area of the body that has skin laxity, such as the stomach, arms, knees, etc., can be treated with PDO Threads.

How much do PDO Threads cost?

Please call for pricing. (504) 267-4549

Are there complications I should look out for after the procedure?

  • Allergic reaction to ingredients in the threading material
  • Bleeding as a result of the procedure building up behind your skin
  • Visible dimpling or pulling where the threads have been inserted
  • Migration or unintended “movement” of the threads that result in skin that looks lumpy or bulges
  • Pain under your skin as a result of the thread being too “tight” or awkwardly placed
  • Infection at the site of the procedure
